Bibby inspires the next generation of Engineers
Katerina aged 10 and Science Technician Bev Fraser of Walton Priory Middle School visited Gary Masson, Senior Technical Support Engineer, to find out more about the types of temperature sensors used in Bibby Scientific products.
Katerina is currently working on a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project during which she has built her own temperature sensor and written a detailed report on the subject.
Gary demonstrated a number of different temperature sensors including bulb thermometers, thermistors, thermocouples and PT100s. He explained how we measure temperature, display temperature and how to determine 0°C using the triple point of water. In addition Katerina was shown safety devices such as a thermal fuse designed to prevent overheating.
At the end of the visit Gary presented Katerina with a PCB mounted thermostat to help with her project. She hopes to eventually follow a career in mechatronics combining mechanical, electronic and software engineering.
